Because they only heat water while a tap is actually running, there’s no standing loss from a tank sitting hot around the clock, and no risk of running out mid-shower the way a storage tank can.
They’re also well suited to properties with hot water needed at a distance from the main system, or where several outlets need to run at once, since the water heats on demand rather than draining a fixed supply. Sizing matters here more than on any other system type: a unit rated for one outlet won’t cope with three bathrooms running simultaneously, so we size against your actual peak flow rate, not the unit that happened to be there before.
Electric vs gas instantaneous
Electric instantaneous units work by heating water through an immersed element, and are available in single-phase or three-phase configurations depending on demand. Gas continuous flow units typically deliver a higher flow rate for whole-house use where a gas supply is already connected. Boosting an existing system
An instantaneous unit doesn’t have to replace your whole system. It’s also used to top up a limited-capacity storage tank, or to back up an intermittent energy supply like a heat pump or solar system on a cloudy day or during high demand. If your current system is running short rather than failing outright, this is often a cheaper fix than a full replacement.
